Sister Cities

Funchal has been for long, a cosmopolitan city opened to the World.

Its geostrategic position has made that Madeira, ever since the XV century, performed an important role in the great Portuguese discoveries, becoming also famous in the rich commercial routes which linked the port of Funchal to the Atlantic World. This dock movement permitted to root the cosmopolitan character of our city.

In his book "Eternity", published in 1933, José Maria Ferreira de Castro, Portuguese writer, known still in our days as the author with the biggest work translated worldwide, "called" the Golden Gate cafe, as “the Corner of the World".



The history of our island dictated the emigration of our fellow citizens to the 4 corners of the world.In this sense, the Town has come to establish partnerships and diverse collaborations with other Cities, whether for historical reasons or for being places of residence of many madeirans.
