The Mercado do Lavradores (Farmers Market), a project by Edmundo Tavares (1892-1983), was inaugurated on the 25th of November 1940. It is a witness of the Estado Novo (New State) architecture by the grandiosity of its conception and the intention to make it the great supplier of the city.
The façade is garnished by the main entrance door and the fish area, massive Batisttini faience glazed tiles panels, dated from 1940, depicting local themes, painted by João Rodrigues.
Inside of it, everywhere you go, through its ladders, squares and “narrow streets”, one can find an immense variety of products, colors, smells, senses and people, all mixed up together.
